Gulveer Singh became the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m event, producing a remarkably assured performance on a rain-soaked track to clinch a silver here.

Running in difficult conditions amid a heavy downpour at the Scotstoun Stadium here, the 28-year-old Gulveer stayed with the leading pack throughout before unleashing a brilliant finish in the final few laps.

“It always feels good to win a medal. The race was good, there was rain but when you win a medal it hardly matters if there is rain, sunshine, heat or anything else," the reigning Asian champion told PTI.

“I had left everything on God. Before the race I told almighty, dekh lena (please watch over me)," he added.

The soft-spoken Army man from Uttar Pradesh’s Atrauli laughed when asked if he had spoken to his family after the historic feat, revealing that he hadn’t event told them about the race as yet.

“My family must be sleeping. I don’t tell them on race days, I will tell them tomorrow. I don’t disturb them, they can watch later. Right now the focus is now on the 5k run. Let’s hope the almighty remains kind towards me," he said.

Training under Scott Simmons in the United States, Gulveer executed a near-perfect tactical race in a strong field featuring multiple African runners, including 2023 World Championships medallist from Kenya Daniel Ebenyo, who boasted a personal best of 26:57.80.

Despite persistent rain, he stayed with the lead pack, and moved into medal contention in the closing stages, producing a powerful final kick to edge past Isle of Man’s David Mullarkey for silver. Mullarkey took the bronze medal in 27:50.28 seconds.

Gulveer’s silver marked the first time since the 1986 Commonwealth Games that no African athlete finished on the podium in the men’s 10,000m.

The feat was reminiscent of Avinash Sable’s historic silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2022 Birmingham Games, where he had ended Kenya’s dominance.

Heartbreak for Pooja

However, there was disappointment in store in women’s high jump where Asian champion Pooja Singh bowed out after failing to clear 1.82m.

Making her CWG debut, the 19-year-old’s event was disrupted by heavy rain before play resumed. Pooja could not clear the bar in her third and final attempt at 1.82m, bringing an end to her campaign.

Radhakrishnan said the athletes’ performances would inspire young athletes across the country, while highlighting Gulveer’s historic achievement as India’s first Commonwealth Games medallist in the men’s 10,000m event.

Madhya Pradesh’s head coach and former India wicketkeeper-batsman Chandrakant Pandit believes MP off-spinner Saransh Jain, 33, will do justice to his India call-up for the Test series against Sri Lanka, starting at Galle on August 15.

Pandit has played a huge role in Saransh’s progress at MP. “Earlier, Saransh used to hardly play one match in a year. When I started coaching the MP team in 2020, I started giving him regular opportunities because I felt he’s a genuine off-spinner and has something special in him. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has now rightly earned the India cap. I’m confident he will do well at the highest level,” Pandit told mid-day on Tuesday.

Jain, 33, has claimed 188 first-class wickets and scored 2223 runs in 54 matches so far. Pandit explained how he turned around Jain’s bowling fortunes. “Saransh Jain is the only off-spinner in the country, who bowls round the wicket from the very first ball. Earlier, he used to bowl over the wicket. But I felt he could be more effective bowling round the wicket, so I convinced him to do so by showing him his videos and explaining the line at which he could bowl and succeed. He started doing this, picked wickets, and his confidence grew. He realised bowling round the wicket facilitated more Leg Before Wicket [LBW] dismissals, caught-behinds and even clean bowled dismissals. He is very skillful, hardworking and accurate with his line. He’s a fine student of the game, always curious to learn more, and that’s a great sign,” added Pandit, who also offered some words of advice to his ward, going forward.

“Saransh called me today [Tuesday] and I told him that he has reached this stage because of the hard work he has put into first-class cricket. So, he should continue bowling in Tests like he does in first-class cricket. I told him, ‘Rather than thinking that I’m bowling to a Test player, forget about it and just bowl as you do at first-class level.’ He has to stick to his basics, that’s all,” concluded Pandit.

Selangor [Malaysia], July 29 (ANI): Chandigarh’s Guntas Kaur Sandhu carded a brilliant one-over 73 to take the tied second spot along with three other golfers after the opening round of the coveted Malaysia Ladies Amateur Open here on Tuesday.

The 15-year-old is part of a two-member Indian team sent by the Indian Golf Union, the National Sports Federation (NSF) recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), Government of India, according to a release.

Panchkula’s Ceerat Kang carded a two-over 74 at the par-72 Glenmarie Golf & Country Club to end Day 1 in solo sixth position. Malaysia’s Foong Zi Yu submitted her card at one-under 71 to take the opening round lead. In the team championship, India are placed third with a combined total of three-over 147.

A total of 54 golfers from 11 countries, including China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, South Korea, Philippines and Singapore, are competing in the event.

Guntas sank three birdies on the ninth, 11th and 16th holes against bogeys on the 10th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes. Talking about her round, Guntas said, “The course is playing in pristine conditions and I quite liked how it behaved today. I tried to utilise all my learnings on the IGU circuit here in Malaysia and the outcome has been very positive. There are two rounds left and I resolve to maintain my concentration and focus on the process. Hoping for a memorable result."

The tournament, in its 40th edition, was staged at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club, having a course rating of 72.1 and a slope rating of 122. Around 40 amateur golfers from 20 countries will compete in the three-round event, with individual winners decided after 54 holes, while the champion team will be decided after 36 holes with the combined score of the two golfers.

Guntas posted 13 top-10 finishes, including four victories from 20 starts on the IGU amateur circuit. The 15-year-old won the IGU Eastern India Ladies, IGU Southern India Ladies, IGU Maharashtra Ladies and IGU West Bengal Ladies in the 2025-26 season. (ANI)
