FIFA has confirmed it has launched an investigation into the post-match brawl that erupted following Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina.

The match had already been a heated affair, with Argentina’s indiscipline proving costly as midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsí.

Scenes turned ugly after the final whistle, with Leandro Paredes appearing to put his hands around Eric García’s throat, while Nahuel Molina seemed to punch Rodri in the stomach.

Meanwhile, Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also seen appearing to strike Spain forward Dani Olmo during the post-match confrontation, before Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and several players intervened to restore order.

FIFA has confirmed it has opened a disciplinary investigation to determine whether further action is warranted.

“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the Fifa World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code (FDC), the Fifa Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,” Fifa said in a statement.

Bafana Bafana have climbed six places in the latest FIFA World Rankings following their historic run to the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup.

The updated rankings were released this week after the conclusion of the tournament, with South Africa now occupying 54th place in the world, their highest ranking in more than a decade.

Hugo Broos‘ side also remain among Africa’s top 10 teams, although they still trail continental heavyweights Morocco and Senegal, who continue to lead the way.

South Africa were one of eight African nations to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup, with Tunisia the only team from the continent to exit at the group stage.

How Bafana climbed the rankings

Bafana entered the World Cup ranked 60th in the world, and their opening defeat to Mexico did little to boost their standing.

However, a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Czechia in their second group match helped them gain valuable ranking points. They then secured a crucial victory over then-26th-ranked South Korea, a result that propelled them six places up the rankings.

Although South Africa were edged 1-0 by Canada in the Round of 32, they retained their new position as the teams immediately below them failed to collect enough points to overtake them.

A victory over Canada would have lifted Bafana into FIFA’s top 50 rankings for the first time in years, marking another significant milestone for South African football.

Breaking into the top 50 could also have brought long-term benefits beyond the national team.

Under the English Premier League’s Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) system, players from higher-ranked nations generally have an easier pathway to securing work permits, potentially making it easier for South African footballers to earn direct moves to Premier League clubs.

Bafana will look to improve their rankings in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.

Will Bafana get into the top 50?

Kaizer Chiefs will come up against club legend Knowledge Musona for the first time in more than a decade when they face Zimbabwean outfit Scotland FC in the Toyota Cup on Sunday.

Amakhosi host Scotland FC at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in what promises to be an emotional occasion, with Musona set to face his former club for the first time since leaving Naturena.

Musona enjoyed two spells with Chiefs and remains one of the club’s most beloved former players.

Nicknamed the “Smiling Assassin” by Amakhosi supporters, the Zimbabwean forward made the biggest impact during his first stint, arriving as an unknown youngster before developing into one of the PSL’s most feared attackers.

Between 2009 and 2011, Musona scored 19 goals in 49 appearances, helping Chiefs win three trophies before earning a move to Germany. He also finished as the PSL Golden Boot winner after scoring 15 league goals in his final full season with the club.

Musona had a memorable first spell at Kaizer Chiefs

He returned to Amakhosi on loan in 2013 under Stuart Baxter and, although he netted an impressive nine goals in 19 appearances, his second spell never quite matched the excitement of his first. Nevertheless, his quality remained evident, and after leaving Chiefs he revived his career in Belgium, where he scored 35 goals for Oostende.

Sunday’s encounter will also see another former Chiefs star, Khama Billiat, line up for Scotland FC. The Zimbabwean duo will have the opportunity to face the club where they both made their names in South African football.

Musona is considered one of the modern great for Kaizer Chiefs having lifted them up for two seasons. He is past his peak but fans will welcome his return to South Africa even if it’s just one game.

For Chiefs supporters, it will be a nostalgic occasion to see two familiar faces back on the same pitch. For Billiat in particular, the match could provide a sense of closure after his departure from Naturena without the chance to properly bid farewell to the Amakhosi faithful.
